Falstaff was Verdi’s last joint project with long-time collaborator Arrigo Boito, who adapted Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor into the libretto, also incorporating several scenes from Henry IV, parts 1 and 2.  The score is like nothing else he wrote. Verdi really captures the essence of Sir John Falstaff’s character: a man so essentially full of himself that he manages to take credit even when he is the object of humiliating public ridicule. Verdi relished the opportunity to write a comic opera (only two of his twenty eight operas were comedies), and produced a witty, dynamic and elegant piece like no other in the entire operatic repertoire.
